In the wake of a resounding BNP victory, senior leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has celebrated the triumph of “liberal democracy” as the defining achievement of the national mandate.

He made the remark at a BNP media briefing held in the ballroom of the InterContinental Dhaka on Saturday afternoon.

“Just as the BNP is unified under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, the 180 million people of this country are equally united,” he said in his inaugural speech.

“They want change... and that change is a transformation in development, an evolution of their circumstances, and the democratisation of both politics and the economy,” he added.

The BNP has secured an absolute majority in Thursday’s general election, winning 209 seats.

“This election marks a victory for liberal democracy,” he said.

He called for building a Bangladesh based on peace, love, and democracy.
