BNP has won all three parliamentary constituencies in Lalmonirhat, securing two of the seats for the first time in nearly five decades.
The party secured Lalmonirhat-1 and Lalmonirhat-2 after 47 years, and Lalmonirhat-3 after 25 years.
In Lalmonirhat-1 (Hatibandha-Patgram), BNP candidate Md Hasan Rajib Prodhan won the 13th general election with 138,686 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Md Anwarul Islam Raju, secured 129,572 votes. The margin was 9,114 votes.
According to the Election Commission, the last time BNP won Lalmonirhat-1 was 47 years ago in the second parliamentary election on Feb 18, 1979, when Kazi Nuruzzaman secured 23,072 votes. His closest rival was Awami League (Malek) candidate Abid Ali, who got 20,286 votes.
The seat was subsequently won by the Jatiya Party and Awami League in different elections.
In Lalmonirhat-2 (Aditmari-Kaliganj), BNP’s Md Rokon Uddin Babul won with 123,946 votes. His closest rival, Jamaat’s Md Firoz Haider, secured 117,252 votes. Babul won by a margin of 6,694 votes.
According to EC data, BNP last won this seat 47 years ago in the 1979 election, when Mojibur Rahman secured 22,726 votes. His closest rival was Awami League (Malek) candidate Shah Alam. Mojibur Rahman won by 8,331 votes.
In Lalmonirhat-3 Sadar, BNP’s Asadul Habib Dulu won with 139,651 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat’s Md Abu Taher, secured 56,244 votes. Dulu won by a margin of 83,407 votes.
As per EC data, the last BNP victory in Lalmonirhat-3 came 25 years ago in the eighth parliamentary election on Oct 1, 2001, when Dulu secured 63,359 votes. His nearest rival was Awami League’s Abu Sayeed Dulal, who received 42,912 votes.
In the second parliamentary election on Feb 18, 1979, BNP candidate Riaz Uddin Ahmed had won Lalmonirhat-3 with 22,575 votes. His closest rival was Awami League’s Abul Hossain, who bagged 21,472 votes.
