Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders have lodged a formal complaint with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, alleging that the Jamaat-e-Islami is distributing money to influence voters in the parliamentary election.

A BNP delegation, led by the party’s electioneering chief Nazrul Islam Khan, met the CEC at the Election Commission headquarters on Wednesday evening.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Nazrul said the party had raised concerns over what he described as “several highly undesirable incidents” that have occured.

“We believe these developments are not only unacceptable to us but to the nation as a whole,” he said. “We informed the Election Commission so that such actions do not recur.”

He referred to an incident at Saidpur Airport involving a politician who was reportedly found carrying a large sum of cash.

“While the legal process will take its course, the timing of the incident raises serious questions,” Nazrul said, suggesting it could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
