Bangladesh reports 1 dengue death, 338 hospital admissions in 24 hours

This year's dengue death toll rises to 38, with 20 fatalities recorded in July alone

One more person has died from dengue in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, while 338 new patients have been admitted to hospitals with the mosquito-borne disease.

The latest fatality brings the country's dengue death toll to 38 so far this year, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in its daily bulletin released on Tuesday.

Of the total deaths recorded in 2026, 20 occurred in July alone.

The bulletin, covering the 24-hour period from 8am on Monday, said 338 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country.

Among them, 41 were admitted to hospitals under the Dhaka North City Corporation, while 76 were admitted to facilities under the Dhaka South City Corporation.

Another 18 patients were hospitalised in areas outside the two city corporations.

Outside the capital, Barishal Division recorded 76 hospital admissions, followed by Chattogram with 66, Khulna with 34, Mymensingh with 11, Rangpur with 10 and Rajshahi with six.

During the same period, 339 dengue patients were discharged after recovering, the DGHS said.

Since Jan 1, a total of 11,195 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals nationwide. Of them, 10,125 have recovered and been discharged.

The DGHS has maintained records of dengue-related hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.

The country's worst dengue outbreak on record occurred in 2023, when 321,179 patients were admitted to hospitals and 1,705 people died from the disease.

Last year, Bangladesh recorded more than 400 dengue deaths, while around 102,000 people were diagnosed with the infection.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation as seasonal monsoon conditions create favourable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes, urging the public to eliminate stagnant water and take preventive measures against mosquito bites.
