Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has begun walking bit by bit after undergoing a heart procedure, doctors say.

Dr Moniruzzaman Maruf, who oversaw the stent procedure to treat a blockage in Tamim’s heart on Tuesday, provided an update on the iconic opener's recovery.

Efforts were underway to keep the area outside the CCU of KPJ Specialised Hospital and Nursing College quiet and free from crowds.

“Tamim is doing well now. The good news is, he’s started walking a bit and is happy. He was moved to a cabin for a short while to meet his family but has been brought back to the CCU for further observation,” Moniruzzaman said.

The tension at the hospital was palpable on Monday when news of Tamim’s heart attack broke, sending shockwaves across Bangladesh and the cricket world. Fans and supporters waited with bated breath for updates on his condition.

The hospital’s CCU area was quickly crowded, disrupting the natural workflow there. Doctors and hospital staff have been trying to prevent a gathering outside the CCU since Tuesday morning.

Tamim, the captain of Mohammedan Sporting Club, complained of sharp pains in his chest before the team took to the field in a match against Shinepukur Cricket Club at Savar’s BKSP No. 3 field on Monday.

He was then rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered a block in his heart and decided to fit a stent to restore blood flow.
