Khulna, Jan 5 (bdnews24.com) – Khulna Government BL College was closed Monday after student clashes which left at least 14 people injured, including two police officers
Fighting broke out between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir over control of dormitories on campus, said police
"The clash ensued after activists opf both groups armed with sticks swooped on each other," said Daulatpur police station officer in charge Shahidul Islam.
Some nine BCL activists and three ICS activists were reported injured, he said.
Islam added that he himself and another police officer were hurt while they were attempting to stop the fighting.
"A number of rooms were also vandalized," he said.
Both student wings have blamed each other for initiating the campus violence.
"We resisted the Shibir activists armed with sticks after they attacked us," Shafiqur Rahman Polash, president of Khulna city BCL unit, told reporters.
His ICS counterpart told the opposite tale.
"Students in the hostel defended themselves as a group of chhatra league activists with arms went to occupy the hall," Mujahidul Islam Abhi, president of Khulna city ICS unit, told reporters.
Authorities declared the college indefinitely closed at noon after the morning's clashes. Students were told to vacate the hostels by 3pm.
"A peaceful situation is now prevailing on campus where police have been deployed to stave off any unpleasant situation," said a local police officer.
