Dhaka, Dec 21 (bdnews24.com) — Admission lottery for first graders of 13 schools in Dhaka has begun.
On the first day of the draws on Tuesday, students were selected for three schools — Government Laboratory High School, Tejgaon Government High School and Khilgaon Government High School.
This lottery to primary levels is being for the first time in line with a cluster system developed by the government.
Of the 24 secondary schools in the capital under the education directorate, 13 have first grades. They have been grouped into three clusters — 'Ka', 'Kha' and 'Ga'.
There are 1,500 seats for the first grade in these schools. Of the first-grade seats, five percent are preserved for children of freedom fighters while two percent seats are for children with disabilities.
Admission lotteries for the 'Ka' group were held on Tuesday.
In the three schools under 'Ka' group, selection for the morning shift started at 10am while the lottery for the noon shift started at 2pm.
The admission selection was held on the school premises in presence of a representative from the directorate.
The education directorate's director general Nomanur Rashid conducted the lottery at Government Laboratory High School around 10am.
The name and roll number of the successful candidates were declared immediately after the lottery. The results were also projected on a large screen.
Of the 120 seats for the morning shift, 11 were preserved for quotas.
Director of the secondary and higher education directorate (secondary section) professor Zakir Hossain was present at the inaugural ceremony.
The lotteries for the 'Kha' and 'Ga' groups will be held on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
The 'Kha' group includes Motijheel Government Boys' High School, Narinda Government High School, Banglabazar Government Girls' High School, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Government Boys' High School, Government Science College Attached High School and Mohammadpur Government High School.
There are four schools under 'Ga' group — Dhanmondi Government Boys' High School, Sher-e-Bangla Government Girls' High School, Ganabhaban Government High School and Tejgaon Government Girls' High School.
VIQARUNNISA LOTTERY
Lottery was also held for admission to Viqarunnisa Noon School and College and will continue on Wednesday.
The institution's governing body's chief Rashed Khan Menon told reporters, "We are very happy to be able to introduce the system despite demonstrations. We have successfully launched it although we were under pressure from different quarters."
Menon said that the first grade admission selections at Ideal School and College will also be held through lotteries from next year.
More than 22,000 admission forms were sold this year while 16,500 were submitted.
Most of the guardians could not understand the admission selection process at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College as it used a digital system. So they were in confusion over it. The school authorities displayed the previous waiting list by projector as the guardians requested.
Professor P K Saha of the electrical and electronic engineering department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) conducted the lottery.
