President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has lauded Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for his speech the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, describing it as “visionary, resolute and direction-setting”.
In a congratulatory message on Friday, Fakhrul said the speech had clearly set out Bangladesh’s national interests, the aspirations of its people and the country’s position on key global issues.
The head of state said the address would further strengthen Bangladesh’s standing on the world stage.
Tarique delivered the speech at UN headquarters in New York after 6pm local time on Thursday.
Fakhrul said the address reflected what he described as the country’s progress towards democracy since the end of “fascist rule”, as well as the government’s commitment to human rights and good governance and its goal of building a prosperous, self-reliant welfare state.
He also highlighted Tarique’s reference to the government’s “3-R” strategy of Recovery, Restoration and Reconstruction.
Fakhrul said Tarique had used the UN platform to set out Bangladesh’s position on democratic progress, world peace, multilateralism, Palestine, the Rohingya crisis, climate change, the economy, employment, women’s and youth empowerment, education, health and technology.
The speech, he added, had presented an “accurate picture” of the pressures facing the global economy from wars and conflicts, energy insecurity and rising inflation.
Fakhrul called the address a “moment of pride” for the nation, noting that Tarique is the third member of the Zia family to address the General Assembly.
His father, the late president Ziaur Rahman, addressed the Assembly’s 11th special session on Aug 26, 1980.
His mother Khaleda Zia addressed the 48th session on Oct 1, 1993, and went on to speak before the Assembly five times in total up to 2005 as Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister.
Praising Tarique’s vision of the UN as “the centre of efforts to establish an understanding-based global community”, Fakhrul said: “In a world of conflict, this call for peace through dialogue, diplomacy and mutual cooperation is deeply significant.”
Referring to the prime minister’s pledge of “Bangladesh First: Bangladesh for All”, Fakhrul said the address reflected the government’s aspiration to build a “safe, peaceful and prosperous” Bangladesh through the political and economic empowerment of its people.
