Warts removed from left hand of ‘Tree Man’

Doctors have performed a surgery to remove warts from the left hand of Abul Bajandar, about a month after they fixed his right hand.

Bajandar, nicknamed ‘Tree Man’ for the rare bark-like warts on his hands and legs, is recuperating after the operation, said Dr Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Warts weighing a few kilograms were removed during the surgery lasting ninety minutes on Saturday, he said.

On Feb 21, doctors removed warts from his right hand.

Bajandar, suffering the ‘Tree Man Syndrome’ or Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis in medical terms, had warts weighing about 10kgs on his two hands when he was admitted to the DMCH for treatment on Jan 30.

He still has warts on his feet.

Before him, only two people were found with this disease -- one in Romania and the other in Indonesia.

The government is bearing the medical costs for Bajandar, who is a rickshaw-van puller by profession.
