The United States regards Bangladesh as “a strong regional and global partner in the fight against extremism”, it said on Tuesday.

Cesare Tavella, employed by the Netherlands-based NGO ICCO, was gunned down on Monday evening at the heart of the diplomatic enclave in Gulshan amid the security concerns of western countries, including the US.

Radical Islamist militant group Islamic State has reportedly claimed the responsibility for the murder.

The Department of State says they are aware of the murder. “‎We extend our deepest condolences to the victim's family and friends and to Italy”.

The US embassy, which earlier advised its national to limit movement, urged its citizens to exercise caution and review the security information that could be found at its website.
