Dhaka, May 24 (bdnews24.com)—'Sweden Aslam', listed as a terrorist by the government, and three of his accomplices on Sunday were each handed down 17 years in jail on charge of possession of illegal arms and ammunition.
The cohorts were Abu Taher Tarun, Hasan Imam and Babu alias Babul. The first two are now on the run.
Mohammad Matiar Rahman, judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal Court-7, handed down the verdict in a packed courtroom at midday.
The Detective Branch of police had arrested Aslam and Babul in a drive at a house under Road-4 of DOHS-20 on May 20, 1997, though Tarun and Imam managed to slip through the dragnet.
Police recovered illegal arms and ammunition from them.
Aslam faces 16 cases that include six for murder and four for possession of illegal arms.
He was earlier awarded jail sentence in two cases.
