Dhaka, Nov 17 (bdnews24.com)—Acclaimed filmmaker, actor and cultural activist Subhash Dutta was cremated on Saturday amid state honour.
People from the film industry, cultural arena and different spectrums of the society attended his funeral at the Postogola Crematorium in the evening along with his family members, relatives and friends, his brother Bikash Dutta told bdnews24.com.
Subhash Dutta, one the legendary figures of the country's film industry, died at his RK Mission Road residence in the capital Friday morning. He was 82.
He was suffering from old-age complications including heart diseases for a long time.
His mortal remains were taken to Ramkrishna Mission at 9am on Saturday. Then his body was taken to Central Shaheed Minar at around 10:30am under arrangements of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote for people to pay their last respects.
There a contingent of police offered the Guard of Honour and salutes to the late freedom fighter recalling his contribution to the 1971 Liberation War.
His body was taken to Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) premises around 1pm and the members of the film industry paid their last respect to the eminent film director.
Then, his remains were taken to Postogola Crematorium in the afternoon for cremation.
Earlier at the Shaheed Minar, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote President Nasir Uddin Yusuf Bachchu remembered the talented filmmaker for his contributions to the country's film industry.
He said, "Subhash Dutta created new language and new current in Bangladesh's films. He cannot be copied, he can only be followed."
Bachchu said Dutta's most famous films -- 'Sutarang' (Hence), 'Arunodoyer Agnishakhi', (Witness to the rising sun) and Abirbhab would be remembered in the history of Bangladesh's film industry.
Film director Morshedul Islam, famous actor, actor Asaduzzaman Noor MP, actor Mamunur Rashid and film actor Ilias Kanchan also spoke there among others.
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif also placed wreaths on the coffin paying their tributes.
Among others, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, cultural personalities Ramendu Majumdar, Pijush Bandapadhyay, Abdul Jabbar, and Fakir Alamgir also paid their tributes to the legendary filmmaker.
Film maker Amzad Hossain said Subhash Dutta was the symbol of Bangla films.
Remembering the great filmmaker, legendary film actor Razzak said, "The country has lost an artist, a director through his death."
Dutta is regarded as one of those few filmmakers who dedicated themselves to establishing cinema as an eloquent medium of art in Bangladesh. He made a good number of films that immensely contributed to the making of the golden era of Bengali cinema.
Dutta, who was born in Dinajpur on Feb 9, 1930, left behind two sons, two daughters and many grandchildren. His wife passed away in 2001.
