Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

A tripartite MOU was signed between the ministry, Dhaka University and Inditex Chair of Spanish Language and Culture (Institute of Modern Language) on Wednesday to impart the training.

The foreign ministry’s director general M Allama Siddiki, Dhaka University’s Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin, Chair Coordinator of Inditex María Amparo Porta Rivas singed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations.

Vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Secretary (bilateral) Mustafa Kamal, and Spain’s ambassador Luis Tejada Chacon were present during the signing at the university.

According to the foreign ministry, the purpose of the MoU is “to generate interest towards Spanish language among the young Foreign Service officers of the country”.

More than 400 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it second only to Mandarin in terms of its number of native speakers worldwide.

Spanish is also used as an official language by the European Union.
