He was admitted to the hospital in a critical state on Thursday, Dr Saiduzzaman Apu told bdnews24.com.

He worked as a music director in several films including Debdas, Chandranath, Shasti,  Ora Egaro Jon, Shankhanil Karagar, Biraj Bou.

He hosted a radio programme in 1959 in which popular singers like Sabina Yasmin and Shahnaj Rahmatullah took part as children artists.

He joined HMV (His Master’s Voice) the next year and composed many albums.

Alam worked at Bangladesh Television since its inception.

His production ‘Surbitan’ was a popular BTV programme.

Born in Assam in 1939, Alam is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

His body will be kept at the Central Shaheed Minar from 11am to 12pm on Saturday for people to pay their last respect to the artist, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote told bdnews24.com.

He might be buried at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard but that was yet to be confirmed, said musician Doulotur Rahman.
