Police said the incident took place around 11:30pm at the house of the city’s Ward No. 30 Awami League General Secretary Shahidul Islam Shahid at Binodpur near Rajshahi University.

Apart from Shahid, Ward AL member and Mirzapur Nazmul Haque High School teacher Mainul Hossain also came under attack.

Ruhul Amin, President of Ward No. 30 Juba League unit, received injuries while trying to save the duo from the assault by Shibir activists.

The trio have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

The hospital’s emergency doctor Saidur Rahman told reporters, “Shahid’s body had hack wounds and the tendons of his both legs were cut. Mainul was hacked too and tendon of his left hand was cut.”

Doctors said both were in critical condition.

Injured Ruhul Amin said they were having a chat at Shahid’s home.

“Around 11:30pm, at least 40 Shibir men attacked the house chanting slogans. At first they were hacking blindly. Then they pinned Shahid and Mainul to the floor and slashed the tendons.”

Amin also got injured by sharp weapons.

Motihar Police Station OC Asit Kumar Ghosh said, “Police rescued the injured and took them to hospital on getting information [of the attack].”

He said they were conducting raids to catch the assailants of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Binodpur, adjacent to Rajshahi University where the incident took place, is believed to be the Chhatra Shibir stronghold in the district.
