Dhaka, Dec 5 (bdnews24.com)—Hassan Syed, the man alleged to have brutally beaten, bitten and tried to gouge out the eyes of his wife Dhaka University teacher Rumana Manzur, has died under treatment..
Syed died around 6:30am due to cardiac failure on Monday, in the city's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University's (BSMMU) prison cell, deputy inspector general of prisons Golam Haider told bdnews24.com.
He had been suffering from mental instability and was brought to BSMMU hospital on Nov 23, Haider added. He was found lying in the bathroom.
Asked about rumours that Syed committed suicide, Haider said, " Nothing can be said before autopsy is done on the body."
Syed allegedly tortured his wife Rumana, an assistant professor of the international relations department, damaging her eyes on June 5 at her father's residence in Dhanmondi.
Police arrested Syed on June 15, within 10 days of Rumana's father's filing a torture case.
Syed told journalists after his arrest that their conjugal conflict began due to Rumana's alleged relations with an Iranian youth.
