Dhaka, June 16 (bdnews24.com) —The High Court has censured police officers for their failure to arrest Rumana Manzur's husband, accused of torturing her, until it served a ruling.
A bench comprising justices A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Gobinda Chandra Tagore on Thursday also said they would monitor the matter for a month.
The victim's husband, Hassan Syed, was arrested on Wednesday noon, hours after the bench summoned the investigation officer of the case, Dhanmondi Police Station officer-in-charge and Dhanmondi Circle assistant commissioner to appear before it at 10:30am on Thursday.
Rumana, an assistant professor of the International Relations department, was severely assaulted on June 5 at her father's residence at Dhanmondi allegedly by her husband. She was admitted to LabAid Specialised Hospital around 4pm on the day.
The perpetrator had been on the run since then.
Victim's father Manzur Hossain, a retired army man, filed a case with Dhanmondi police the following day.
The bench on Wednesday passed the order at its own motion following reports published in several national dailies.
Lawyer Elina Khan argued for Rumana during the hearing while deputy attorney general A B M Altaf Hossain for the prosecution.
Khan told bdnews24.com that the court wanted explanation from the police officers as they appeared before it for their delay in arresting the perpetrator.
"The court will monitor the next steps in the case for a month," she added.
