Dhaka, Dec 7 (bdnews24.com)—Meher Kabir and Ayesha Jafar will receive the Roquia Award for the year.
On December 9, the Roquia Day, prime minister Sheikh Hasina will hand the awards at Osmani Memorial auditorium. The awardees will receive a gold medal and money.
Meher Kabir was born on June 5, 1921. After her matriculation in 1936 she studied in Kolkata Bethun College and Scottish Church College. She obtained higher degrees in chemistry from University College of Science and Technology.
She came to Dhaka during World War II, leaving her PhD research with Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy and began teaching here.
Kabir was the international commissioner for Girl Guides, vice-president for Mohila Samity and president of Women's Rehabilitation Centre's. She is the wife of national professor and writer Kabir Chowdhury.
Ayesha Jafar was born on Nov 29, 1924 and worked under Sufia Kamal since the 1950s with Nari Kalyan Sangstha.
In an effort to uphold Roquiya's teachings and ideology, she published her books and placed memorials at her birthplace.
Jafar continues to work for social welfare and women's empowerment.
