CCTV footage showing schoolboy Ishayat Shahriar Apratim travelling along different roads with another boy helped his relatives trace his route before his body was found in Cumilla.
Apratim, 13, had left home with his mother’s iPhone to take pictures with friends and went missing.
His body was recovered around noon Saturday from the foot of a hill at Dakkhin Mor in Salmanpur, beside Cumilla University.
A Class 7 student at Border Guard Public School, Apratim was the son of Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the university’s Bangla department.
Prof Mahmud Hasan, dean of the university’s Faculty of Engineering and a neighbour and colleague of Nahida, had been reviewing CCTV footage since morning.
He told reporters, “Apratim and we live next door. He was a very lively boy. We cannot imagine someone could kill such a small child for anything. It is shocking.
“We have been trying to find him since morning. We analysed CCTV footage from different places and eventually tried to come here.”
Asked about the search, he said: “We saw a boy crossing different roads with Apratim. Following that, we came near this road. Then a local person told us a child’s body was lying here. Around [12:30pm], we ran here and saw the horror. We can never accept this.”
District Police Superintendent Md Asaduzzaman said police were questioning one person and had found some “clues”.
Apratim left home around 3:30pm Friday. His father, KM Firoz Shahriar, filed a GD after searches failed. Teachers said his mother’s missing iPhone may have been the motive.
