The inauguration of new camp coincided with the induction of ultra modern F-7BGI fighter planes and MI-171 SH helicopters into the Bangladesh Air Force.

She also unveiled a listing of new inductions into the fleet.

“With the commissioning of new fighter planes, the force will further uphold the image of Bangladesh as a more skilled force in the UN peacekeeping missions,” the Prime Minister told a programme at the Kurmitola in the Dhaka Cantonment area.

Hasina, also chief of the ruling Awami League, said, “Our government never hesitates in assisting (the force) despite limited resources. This is our commitment towards you.”

The camp of the air force had been operating under a temporary management. From now on after its inauguration as a separate base, it will be known as ‘BAF Base Bangabandhu’.

The British government built the air base in 1941 during the Second World War to direct air attacks on Burma.

The work to build a runway for the base began in 1966. The construction of the runway was finished after the Liberation War and during the government under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibor Rahman.

The base was in use by the Air Force and for civil aviation in 1980. The base in Kurmitola was a part of BAF Bashar ever since.

Air Force’s fighter jets have been making full use of the base since 1987.

The inauguration on Tuesday witnessed a parade and ceremonial fly pasts by the new Chinese made fighter jets and Russian made helicopters.

The fighter aircrafts F-7BGI performed aerobatic displays in the air.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina termed the ceremony as a ‘historic event’ saying, “I am very happy to be present among you.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the government has emphasized on the modernization of the country’s armed forces.

“Many instruments of modern warfare have been introduced to the Bangladesh Armed Forces to develop the level of skill, competency and warfare techniques of our Army, Navy and Air Force.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina believes the addition of ultra-modern air craft, helicopters and the establishment of an air base, the second since the Liberation War, is a reflection of the government’s modern policies.

The new air base will decrease pressure on other bases, the Prime Minister hoped.

To the members of the Air Force Sheikh Hasina said, “I have complete faith in your aviation skills. I believe you will be able to develop your training further with this new air base and become better flyers.”

The Prime Minister mentioned that purchase of Transport Trainers, Maritime Search and Rescue and Trainer aircrafts for the Air Force are under consideration.

“There are plans to purchase trainer aircrafts, helicopters and air defence radar via a contract with Russia”, she said.
