354 youths detained overnight in Chattogram anti-juvenile crime drive

Chattogram District Police say they detained 354 youths from different Upazilas during a special drive against juvenile crime.

Another 91 people were detained over allegations involving drugs and other offences during the operation.

A total of 445 people were detained in the drive conducted across 17 Thanas in 15 Upazilas of Chattogram on Sunday night, Additional Superintendent of Police Rasel told bdnews24.com.

He said the operation was carried out from Sunday evening until late at night as part of a special police drive to prevent juvenile crime and keep youths away from criminal activity.

Police conducted checks in neighbourhoods, markets, railway stations, fields, abandoned and secluded places, and other locations where youths were likely to gather.

Young people found gathering in different places or suspected of involvement in suspicious activities were identified, questioned and screened.

Rasel said 354 youths were brought to police stations during the operation.

After verification, 293 were handed over to their guardians after signing undertakings, as police found no evidence linking them to criminal activity.

“On the other hand, action has been taken against 61 under existing laws after initial evidence of their involvement in crime was found,” he said.

Rasel said guardians were called to the police stations after the operation and advised to be more attentive to and aware of their children’s activities.

Police also detained another 91 people over allegations of involvement in drugs and other offences during the drive.
