An official at the Fire Service control room said its nine units doused the flames around 8:45pm on Friday after around an hour’s efforts.
The Fire Service official, Palash Modok, said, "There is no possibility that the fire can spread. The firefighters are finishing the dumping work now."
The extent of damage was yet to be assessed. No casualties were reported.
Mohammad Al Amin, who owns a bookshop in the market, said the fire erupted at a warehouse of books on legal affairs on the first floor of Islamia Market section.
"The fire is not spreading much," he had said.
Booksellers at the market said they were not in fear of any large-scale damage as it was raining in the area.
