Mymensingh to be City Corp

The government has decided to upgrade Mymensingh municipality to a City Corporation.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday told Awami League Parliamentary Party at a meeting that the proposal would be placed at the next meeting of National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR).

The party meeting was held in Parliament in the evening.

Hasina’s Special Assistant (Media) Mahbubul Hoque Shakil said Hasina informed her party MPs of the development.

The inhabitants of Mymensingh have long been demanding that the old municipality be upgraded to a City Corporation.

Besides bifurcating Dhaka into two City Corporations, the ruling Awami League-led coalition made Narayanganj, Comilla, Rangpur, and Gazipur city corporations.

Jubilant crowds poured onto the streets of Mymensingh town on hearing the news and distributed sweets.
