They alleged that around 1:30pm Saturday intern doctor Rakibul Islam Sujon assaulted senior nurse Bakul Rani Das at the hospital's Gynecology ward on the sixth floor.
A hospital administrator said the doctor was suspended and they were trying to resolve the situation. Services at the 600-bed public hospital were crippled by the nurses' strike.
"Intern Rakibul Islam has been temporarily suspended," Mitford's Deputy Director Abu Yusuf said.
The administration has formed a four-member investigation committee.
Yusuf said nurse Das had been admitted to the casualty ward with a bleeding nose.
A nurse named Jasim Uddin told reporters that despite the hospital's action against the offender, the nurses were on strike demanding that Rakibul should not get his medical licence.
"We'll hold a meeting to take further decisions," he said.
Deputy Director Yusuf admitted that there were other allegations against Rakibul.
"This is unacceptable. We will take whatever action is necessary," he said.
