Dhaka, Feb 13 (bdnews24.com) – The director general of the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was removed as part of a massive police overhaul Tuesday, the government said.
SM Mizanur Rahman, who briefly took over as the head of the elite security force during the Iajuddin Ahmed-led caretaker government, was made an official on special duty (OSD), according to a circular of the Establishment Ministry.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Baharul Alam took the helm of the controversial security force, accused of more than 300 extrajudicial killings.
The police administration also underwent a massive overhaul with nine DIGs and 65 superintendents of police (SPs) being replaced Tuesday, the ministry said.
The ministry did not say what prompted the changes but sources said the changes were part of the Fakhruddin Ahmed-led interim government's move to cleanse the police administration.
National police chief Noor Mohammad said the changes would bring dynamism to the police administration.
"It's routine work of the police administration. But we think the changes will bring more dynamism to our work and ensure better performance of our officers," Mohammad told bdnews24.com.
Among the changes, DIG police headquarters Sheikh Sazzad Ali was made the DIG in charge of the Dhaka division.
Additional commissioner Barisal Metropolitan Police Mahbub Muhasin was made Rajshahi range additional DIG and Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner Manjur Kader Khan was made Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional commissioner.
