Family sources say the 87-year old former soldier succumbed to a lung infection on Monday morning at Dhaka’s Apollo Hospital.

His death comes barely ten days after his wife Mumtaz Jahan Zebunissa Majid expired.

Majid ul Haque was born in 1926 at Magura. During the late 1960s, he rose to become a major general in the Pakistan army, one of the few Bengalis to rise that high in the military hierarchy of undivided Pakistan.

Bangladesh’s first military ruler Ziaur Rahman inducted Majid ul Haque as minister for industries, railways and communication in his cabinet in 1978. A year later, Majid ul Haque was elected to the Bangladesh parliament on a BNP ticket from Magura.

Later, he served as Minister for water resources and agriculture in Khaleda Zia’s government (1991-1996).

He also remained on the BNP Standing Committee for long years.

Majid ul Haque’s Namaz-e-Janaza will be performed at the Allahu Masjid in the Dhaka cantonment on Monday after Asr prayers, his eldest son Ishtiaq Majid told bdnews24.com.

His Qulkhwani will be held on Friday afternoon at the Old DOHS Community Centre at Banani, he said.

They have left behind two sons and a daughter.
