Dhaka, Feb 8 (bdnews24.com)—Former CSP Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed, who retired in 2003 as education secretary, will head the Election Commission, a senior Bangabhaban official said Wednesday.
A K M Nesar Uddin Bhuiyan, the press secretary to the president, told bdnews24.com that the Cabinet Division would now make the formal announcement.
"Kazi Rakib joined the Pakistan Civil Service in the late 1960s and had been known as an honest and upright officer," a former colleague said of the former secretary.
Two other retired civil servants were made commissioners, while the five-member commission will also include one retired military officer and a former district judge.
Retired additional secretary Mohammad Abu Hafiz, retired joint secretary Abdul Mobarak, retire brigadier general Jabed Ali, retired sessions judge Mohammad Shahnewaz will work with Kazi Rakib for the next five years.
The president, Md Zillur Rahman, accepted the recommendations from a search committee headed by a Supreme Court judge who submitted a list of 10 names including two for CEC.
The other person proposed for CEC was Ali Imam Majumder, a former cabinet secretary appointed by Iajuddin Ahmed-led caretaker government who then continued to serve the military-installed emergency administration. Majumder was a 1977 BCS officer.
