Dhaka, Sept 2 (BDNEWS) – Mismanagement and irregularities plague the country's Mirpur Zoo in the capital.
Though irregularities have been going on there for a fairly long time, the authorities have not taken any step in this regard.
The zoo was set up in a tiny one-storey building.
After entering the zoo on a ticket of Tk 10, one has to buy another ticket of Tk two to see the animals.
Over the loud speaker, visitors can hear the descriptions of different animals kept in different cells. Attractive descriptions of animals are given over loudspeakers.
At least 791 species of animals have been kept in a congested condition at the zoo, established about 25 years back. It covers an area of about one acre of land.
An on-the-spot visit to the zoo revealed that the equipment of the museum are not cleaned regularly and other specimens of skeletons of different animals are not also cleaned.
Most of the fishes kept at the aquariums are of local species and, except Piranha there is no ferocious species of fish.
Most of the aquariums stink as those are not cleaned regularly. Besides, two broken aquariums have been there for a long time.
The visitors are not furnished with any information through booklets generally available in a zoo.
The sources said there are only five employees including an officer, a third class employee and three peons to take care of the zoo. The peons actually take care of it as there is no sweeper there.
In this regard curator of the zoo Mofizur Rahman told BDNEWS that it is not possible to make the zoo attractive, as there is lack of adequate fund for it.
