Sylhet, Sep 29 (bdnews24.com) – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman has demanded removal of the prisons chief and threatened to move the court against him for 'violating law'.
Mizanur Rahman made the comments after the Sylhet Central Jail authorities on Thursday prevented him from entering the jail premises as per an order of the inspector general (IG) of prisons, Brig Gen Mohammad Ashraful Islam Khan.
"The commission will move the High Court against the IG of prisons for not following constitutional law, if necessary," Mizanur told reporters around 11:30am.
The NHRC chief, who teaches law at Dhaka University, said he kept trying to enter the jail for around one-and-a-half hours from 9am, but in vain.
The IG prisons did not even listen to the local administration's pleas to allow him entry, the NHRC chief said.
Mizanur wanted to visit the jail to take stock of the human rights condition of the inmates and forward some proposals to the government for reforms, if need be.
"How does he consider himself so powerful?" asked Mizanur, adding the post should be held by someone who understands law.
