Huge yaba haul at Chittagong port

The Navy has recovered 1.5 million Yaba tablets from a trawler at the outer anchorage of Chittagong port.

Authorities claimed it is the biggest ever seizure of Yaba in Bangladesh.

Navy's Commander SM Atikur Rahman said that a patrol asked the trawler plying in the area to stop around 2:30am on Thursday.

Instead of stopping , it dashed off towards the Anwar Parki beach, where the crew abandoned it and escaped.

1.5 million Yaba tablets were found on searching the vessel.

The smuggling of yaba tablets from Myanmar to Bangladesh and India is on the rise.

The drug is cheap and popular with addicts looking for a quick fix.

The United Wa State Army (UWSA), an ethnic rebel group of Myanmar, are said to be the largest Yaba producer, but other lesser producers are known to be operating on Myanmar's borders with northeast India.

The 'Ah Hua' cartel had actually set up a Yaba producing unit in the heart of Kolkata a decade ago before it was busted by India's Narcotics Control Bureau.

The unit was located in a rented accommodation owned by a former regional chief of India's CBI Upen Biswas.

Biswas is now a minister in Mamata Banerjee's Trinamul Congress government.

But NCB absolved Biswas of foul play, saying the top cop had no idea who he had rented his house to.
