The Supreme Court’s chamber judge gave the order on Tuesday after the State filed a petition the previous day.

“The chamber judge has forwarded the matter to the full appeals bench and fixed July 14 to hear the matter,” Deputy Attorney General Masud Hasan told bdnews24.com.

On, Jun 15, the court upheld death sentences pronounced on six persons and life term for one, reduced capital punishment for seven to life imprisonment and acquitted 11 others.

A Speedy Trial Tribunal in 2005 had handed down the death penalty to 22 people, including the main accused, BNP leader Nurul Islam Sarkar, and life in prison to six others.

Two of the convicts are dead and one is on the run.

A popular Gazipur politician and then Awami League MP, Ahsanullah Master, was gunned down along with another person on May 7, 2004, while addressing a local conference held on a school ground at Tongi.

Ahsanullah, a freedom fighter, had served as the Gazipur Upazila council chairman before being elected a lawmaker twice in the national polls of 1996 and 2001.

He was a member of the party’s national council and the executive president of the Awami League’s labour affiliate.
