During a discussion on the late Jatiya Party MP Nasim Osman in Parliament on Tuesday, Sheikh Hasina also said ‘conspiracy’ was afoot against this family and vowed to stand by their side.

Nasim’s younger brother and Awami League MP Shamim Osman was present in Parliament during the speech.

Shamim Osman has been accused by many quarters of involvement in the sensational seven murders and the murder of school student Tanvir Ahmed Twaki in Narayanganj.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has accused him of being a “criminal godfather”.

Hasina told Parliament the propaganda against the Osman family was a political ploy.

“The conspiracies to hinder democracy from moving ahead are not over,” she said.

“If someone commits any wrongdoing, the law will punish them. But the nation must be alert against political harassment and attempts to destroy a family,” she said.

“It is our misfortune that this family has constantly come under attack. During the Ayub Khan -Yahya regime, during the Liberation War and after 1975, they came under attack.

“Every government has tortured them in one way or another.”

The Awami League chief also said the family was a victim of media ‘propaganda’.

Shamim and Nasim Osman’s grandfather Osman Ali was among the founding organisers of the Awami League.

The first meeting leading to the formation of Awami League was held in his home.

Their father AKM Shamsuddoha, a founder member, was a member of the first parliament.

Nasim left Awami League to join the Jatiya Party and was elected an MP. Shamim has been elected several times on the Awami League ticket. Another Osman brother, Selim, is running for Jatiya Party in the by-election to fill the vacant seat of his brother. Hasina reminisced about Shamsuddoha’s affiliation with her family. “When we took political asylum in India, Doha uncle was one of the few people to have kept in touch. In ’78, after getting out of jail, he took aunty and some other members to Delhi to meet us,” she said. “In ’71, he went to the house in Dhanmondi where we were being held captive. Pakistani army fired from the roof, and he got a bullet wound,” she said. The prime minister recalled that Nasim got married on Aug 14, 1975, the day before the murder of Bangabandhu and much of his family. “He left his newly-wed wife to take revenge for the death of the father of the nation. Nothing could hold him back,” she said. “The Awami League was founded in the Osman family. I will look after them whenever they need,” she reiterated. Other senior leaders from the Awami League and JP also took part in the condolence motion. Condolence motions were also passed on several other late MPs, former MPs, parliament secretariat staff and prominent personalities who have passed away recently. In keeping with the tradition pertaining to the death of an incumbent MP, the speaker declared the session adjourned until Wednesday.
