Nilphamari, Jan 27 (bdnews24.com) — A freedom fighter has been slaughtered by unidentified miscreants in Nilphamari, police and witnesses said.
The body of Mokhlesur Rahman, 68, also a former chairman of Khatamodhupur Union Parishad, was found in Kamarpukur Kalabagan area of Syedpur Upazila alongside Syedpur-Rangpur highway on Thursday morning.
Police suspect he might have been killed on his way back home at Khiarjumma village in Syedpur Upazila on Wednesday night.
A dawn-to-dusk strike called by the Upazila unit of the Muktijoddha Sangsad was observed in Syedpur Upazila demanding arrest of the killers within 24 hours.
Rahman fought against Pakistani military in the 1971 Liberation War under sector-6.
He had been the chairman of Khatamodhupur Union Parishad for 27 years. Awami League nominated him in the seventh parliamentary election held in 1996.
Syedpur Muktijoddha Sangsad unit hoisted a black flag in front of their office and all freedom fighters wore black badges to condemn the murder.
"Rahman's murder was planned and carried out by his political rivals," Joynal Abedin,
Nilphamari unit chief of the freedom fighters' platform, told bdnews24.com.
Nilphamari police deputy chief Nur Ahmed told bdnews24.com that the district police chief had visited the spot and that the body had been sent to Nilphamari General Hospital for autopsy.
"The family of the deceased is preparing to file a case in connection with the murder. Police have collected some evidence from the spot," Nur Ahmed said on Thursday afternoon.
