Laila Arjumand Banu, a joint secretary at the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, told bdnews24.com that the president, who is Chancellor of all universities in Bangladesh, made the appointment on Thursday.

She said Prof Farid, now on post-retirement leave, will helm the SUST for four years.

His predecessor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan ran his term as vice-chancellor of the university on July 27.

Prof Farid, a former dean of Dhaka University's Faculty of Social Sciences, worked as president of the association of teachers at the premier public university.

He also worked as chief of the Bangladesh Federation of University Teachers' Associations, the organisation of teachers of public universities.

Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University elect VCs by forming panels of candidates, but at SUST, the government makes the appointment in the absence of a senate.
