A Sirajganj court has handed down the death penalty to six people over the abduction and murder of a vegetable seller in 2017.

Senior District and Sessions Judge M Ali Ahmed delivered the verdict in the absence of the convicts on Tuesday, said bench clerk Manowarul Islam.

The capital punishment recipients are Khaja Mia, Md Bashu, Md Enamul, Md Mojahid, Saidul Islam and Milon Sarker.

The victim, Nazmul Islam, was the son of Abdur Rahman from Kismat Kasba village in Naogaon Sadar Upazila. Police found his body at the Hatikumrul roundabout at Sirajganj’s Salanga on Aug 12, 2017.

On Aug 10, 2017, Nazmul bought vegetables from Chargauri Hat in Naogaon and sold them at a shop in Dhaka’s Baipail. Around 3am the following day, kidnappers whisked him away in a black microbus from Chandra and demanded a ransom of Tk 50,000 from his family, Manowarul said, citing the case documents.

He added that Nazmul’s relatives had promised to pay the money on Aug 12, but that morning, they learnt that the police had recovered Nazmul’s body, which was later identified by his family.

The victim’s father, Abdur, then started a murder case with the Salanga Police Station, and law enforcers later pressed charges against seven people following the investigation.

One of the suspects, Saiful Islam, died during the proceedings and the court subsequently dropped his name from the case.

The bench clerk said the court has issued arrest warrants against all the fugitives.

Each of them has also been fined Tk 10,000, and failure to pay will result in a one-month prison sentence, he added.
