Ensure security to Kamal: Hiron

Awami League-led 14-party alliance-backed mayoral candidate for Barisal City Corporation (BCC) election Shawkat Hossain Hiron, who is also the outgoing mayor, has urged the administration to take necessary measures to ensure security of his rival candidate Ahsan Habib Kamal of the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

“I’m urging the government to provide security to Ahsan Habib Kamal if he is suffering from insecurity,” Hiron said at a press conference on Thursday, the last day of the electoral campaign.

One of the supporters of Kamal was injured in police firing on Wednesday night. Kamal was present during the clash.

The clash ensued when the local Awami League leaders and activists handed over some people to the police for distributing leaflets against mayoral aspirant Hiron.

Hiron told the press conference, “Ahsan Habib Kamal is doing false propaganda against me fearing an inevitable defeat. It’s the violation of the electoral code of conducts.”

The Awami League leader further claimed that the activists and supporters of the BNP leader were trying to vitiate the congenial electoral atmosphere.

Sammilita Nagarik Committee President Prof. Mohammad Hanif, its Member Secretaries Mahbub Uddin and Bir Bikram and Hiron’s chief election campaign coordinator Talukder Md. Yusuf were present at the press conference.

Hiron is contesting the mayoral election as a candidate of the Sammilita Nagarik Committee.
