A mother and two of her daughters have been hacked to death in Lakshmipur’s Raipur.

The dead have been identified as Shahinur Begum, 38, her elder daughter Saima Akhter, 21, a university student, and her younger daughter Shifa Akhter, 9.

Shahinur’s middle daughter – 17-year-old college student Ikra Akhter, has been sent to a hospital in Dhaka in critical condition.

Meanwhile, an unidentified youth suspected of being involved in the incident has been beaten. He was sent to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment.

Six to seven police personnel have also been injured by brickbats thrown by an agitated crowd as they tried to bring the situation in the area under control.

The incident took place on Thursday morning at a rented house in the Godown Road area of Ward No. 3 of Raipur Municipality. Locals learnt of the incident and tried to rescue the victims around 12:30pm.

However, no one could say what caused the incident, or whether anyone else was involved.

The dead hailed from the Cumilla district but had been renting a place in the area for many years. The deceased Saima was a student of Dhaka University, while the injured Ikra is a student in 12th grade at Raipur Kazi Faruki College.

Police and locals said that Shahinur has been living in a rented house in the area with her children for many years.

A few years ago, her husband, Md Kamal, died of electrocution. Since then, Shahinur has been living in the house with her three daughters and a son.

Shahinur and her three daughters were attacked in the morning and locals then caught and beat the suspected killer.

Police eventually arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control

Raipur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Baharul Alam said five people had been brought to the hospital with injuries.

“The mother and two of her daughters had died while a third has been sent to Dhaka in critical condition. All of them have injuries from sharp weapons on different parts of their bodies. In addition, a suspect in the killings was injured by a ‘mob’. He has an injury from a sharp weapon on his head.”

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Raipur Circle) Md Abdur Rashed said, “Three people have been killed. Their bodies are in the hospital. Another has been sent to Dhaka. A suspect was beaten up by the crowd. He has also been sent to Sadar Hospital for treatment.

“When we tried to bring the situation under control, the agitated crowd threw bricks and stones, which injured six to seven of our personnel,” he added.
