Local Government State Minister Mir Shahe Alam has expressed hope that the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will complete its sacrificial waste removal drive well before 2am, as the city intensifies post-Eid cleanliness operations.
The minister, along with DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, inspected on-ground waste management activities near Mirpur Ceramic Road on Thursday.
Following the inspection, the state minister said the city corporation was working to meet the directive of completing waste removal within 12 hours of 2pm to provide relief to residents.
“In line with the prime minister's directives, the city corporation is working to provide relief to city dwellers by removing sacrificial waste within 12 hours from 2pm.
“Following that commitment, we have come to inspect the field-level activities today. We hope that the cleanliness drive can be wrapped up well before 2am.”
He added that the cleaning drive would continue for the next two days.
According to DNCC, around 16,000 sanitation workers and 752 vehicles have been deployed for waste management across its jurisdiction.
Urging public cooperation, the state minister said: “Please pack the sacrificial waste in polybags and place them at designated spots. The cleaning staff will remove them swiftly from there. Residents can stay reassured, God willing, we will be able to clean the city in the shortest possible time.”
Shafiqul said the city corporation has implemented a 72-hour coordinated action plan for sacrificial waste management.
He urged residents to maintain cooperation, saying citizens should dispose of waste in polythene bags at designated points for quick collection.
DNCC also said until 2pm on Thursday, a total of 3,158 tonnes of sacrificial waste had been removed from different areas of Dhaka North through 736 truck trips to the Aminbazar landfill.
Senior officials present during the inspection included DNCC Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Chief Health Officer Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, and Chief Engineer Syed Rakibul Hasan, among others.
