Chittagong, May 4 (bdnews24.com) – A Chittagong court has sent former commanding officer of RAB-7 Lt Col Zulfiqar Ali Majumdar to jail for his alleged involvement in the robbery of some Tk 20 million from a shrine in Chittagong.
Judicial magistrate Abu Saleh Md Noman passed the order rejecting his bail prayer on Friday.
The court also fixed May 7 to hear the remand plea for the sacked army officer after Anwara Police Station produced him before the court seeking seven days to quiz him in police custody.
Some members of Rapid Action Battalion-7 in plainclothes on Nov 4 last year entered the Talsara Darbar Sharif in Anwara upazila and allegedly looted Tk 20 million. The RAB team arrested five Myanmar nationals, whom they handed over to police, but did not say anything about the money.
Four months later, driver of the shrine Idris Ali on Mar 13 filed a robbery case with Anwara Police Station accusing Zulfiqar Ali, nine of his subordinates and two of their informers for committing the robbery.
The RAB authorities sent the 10 accused back to their parent forces after a departmental investigation found them guilty of robbery.
Zulfiqar was posted to Army Training and Doctrine Command unit in Momenshahi Cantonment. Later the army carried out a departmental investigation and sacked him.
The Anwara Police Station and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in a joint operation arrested Zulfiqar from Moghbazar in Dhaka in the early hours of Thursday.
He was brought to Anwara in Chittagong on Thursday night.
Talking to reporters at the Anwara Police Station, Zulfiqar claimed he was innocent.
The other accused are Flight Lt Sheikh Muhammad Hasan, Subedar Abul Bashar, Captain Ohidul Hasan, sub-inspector Tarun Kumar Basu, assistant sub-inspector Hasanuzzaman, Nayak Jahangir Hossain and Nayak Suman Chandra Dey, Lance Nayak Liton Mia, Lance Nayak Jasim Uddin, soldier Ashraf Uddin, sources Didar Ul Alam and Anwar Mia.
