A Chittagong University student has been found dead while two others have gone missing at a beach in Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred at the beach next to the Himchari Museum on Tuesday morning.

The deceased was identified as KM Sadman Rahman Sabab, a first-year student at the Department of Development Studies. He hailed from Dhaka’s Mirpur.

The two students who went missing – Aritra Hasan and Asif Ahmed – are students in the same department.

Inspector Somnath Basu of the Himchari Investigation Centre said the friends had gone swimming at a time when the sea was rough. The current caused three of them to go under.

“The body of one of them has surfaced, but the two others are still missing. We are at the beach and rescue operations are underway.”

Md Riad Mia, a classmate of the deceased and a student in the Department of Arabic, said that five friends had come on a trip to Cox’s Bazar on Monday after completing their first-year final examinations. They went to the beach around 5:30am.

“We were taking photos when the rain started to come down. Two of us ran for shelter under the umbrella, but they stayed in the ocean. We called them several times and they kept saying that they were coming. The boatmen were telling them to come ashore too. At one point, they sank into the water.”

Riad said that Sabab’s body floated to shore some time later, but the other two have yet to be found.
