BNP supporter beaten in Natore over allegations of assault, vandalism

Locals have beaten a BNP activist over allegations of assault and vandalism in Natore’s Baraigram Upazila. Police later took him into custody.

The incident occurred in the Bagdob area around 10pm on Sunday night, according to Ifte Khaer Alam, additional superintendent of police.

Mafiz Uddin, the victim of the beating, hails from Baraigram’s Khaksa area. He is a supporter of the BNP.

Citing locals, police said that Mafiz got into an argument with his older brother Omar Ali and nephew Rubel over the boundaries of a deep tube well on Sunday morning. Mafiz then allegedly hired a group of 13-14 criminals on 6-7 motorcycles with makeshift weapons from neighbouring Chatmohar. This group allegedly beat up his brother Omar and threatened him. They also vandalised the home of nephew Rubel in the Chaumahon area.

After sending off the hired goons, Mafiz came to the Bagdob Eidgah area and started a ruckus. Locals then detained him at a house and called the police. As police were taking Mafiz out of the house, agitated locals beat him.

ASP Alam said Mafiz is currently in the custody of Baraigram police Station. Legal action will be taken against him if a complaint is submitted.
