A police couple in Khulna have been arrested after a teenage domestic worker was hospitalised following alleged torture in Sonadanga.

On Thursday, the teenager’s mother filed a case with Sonadanga Model Police, according to officer Rafiqul Islam, chief of the station.

The arrestees are assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) Sanjay Mitra and Popy Mitra.

The teenager is under treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Her mother reportedly came to Khulna from her native home Narsingdi’s Nishchintapur to file the case.

Witnesses attending a social event next to the couple’s house reported seeing the girl being forced to squat while holding her ears on a balcony on Wednesday afternoon.

She was often beaten with a stick and seared by a hot frying pan, they said.

They immediately filmed the incident and reported it to journalists and rights activists, who later tried to enter the house but were denied access.

The girl was rescued by police after a call on the national hotline number 999.

The video of the incident has already gone viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism.

Sanjay was sent to court, but Popy was kept in police custody because she “fell ill” after her arrest, said officer Rafiqul.
