Thousands of Muslims have packed Baitul Mukarram National Mosque for the first Eid-ul-Azha congregation of the day, with worshippers pouring in from across Dhaka from dawn.

The first congregation was held at 7am on Thursday, led by Baitul Mukarram Imam Hafez Maulana Mufti Md Mizanur Rahman.

The mosque was filled to capacity by 6:45am.

After prayers, Muslim devotees raised their hands in supplication, praying for the wellbeing of Bangladesh and its people, before exchanging embraces and Eid greetings in the traditional fashion.

Four more congregations will follow throughout the morning -- at 8am, 9am, 10am, and 10:45am.

Islamic Foundation Director Maulana Waliur Rahman Khan will lead the second, Mufti Md Abdullah the third, Foundation Deputy Director Maulana Md Nur Uddin the fourth, and Foundation Religious Trainer Zubair Ahmad Al-Azhari the fifth and final congregation.

Tight security arrangements have been put in place around the mosque, with law-enforcing agencies maintaining heightened vigilance.

Although the Bangladesh Meteorological Department predicted morning rain in parts of the country, an overcast sky in Dhaka failed to disrupt the morning prayers.
