Comilla Mayor Sakku sworn in for second term by PM

Monirul Haque Sakku has been sworn in as Comilla city mayor by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for his second straight five-year term.

The ceremony took place on Thursday, one and a half months after the election.

The BNP leader, clad in a panjabi, touched Hasina’s feet as a gesture of respect after he was sworn in. 

Local Government Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, PM’s Adviser HT Imam and Local Government Secretary Abdul Malek attended the event.

Sakku nominated by BNP beat the ruling Awami League’s nominee Anjum Sultana Shima for a second term. Two weeks after the vote, the Election Commission issued its gazette.

On Apr 18, a warrant was issued for Sakku by the Anti-Corruption Commission over wealth beyond known sources of income. Sakku surrendered to court and was granted bail on May 9.
