Polls for city corporations of Rajshahi,Khulna and Sylhet also started same time.
bdnews24.com Correspondent said a early morning drizzle for about fifteen minutes appeared to have dampened enthusiasm for voting.
Three candidates are contesting for the position of Barisal city Mayor.
But the real fight is expected between Awami League-backed Shawkat Hossain Hiran and BNP-led 18-Party alliance-backed Ahsan Habib Kamal.
Kamal's poll-sign is ‘pineapple’, Hiran's ‘television’.
The other candidate, Mahmudul Haque Khan Mamun is in the fray with ‘pen and inkpot’.
A woman 'Mahmuda' was the first to vote on an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) at the Barisal Government Commerce College. She told bdnews24.com it took her four seconds to vote.
“The process is easy and simple.”
Khulna’s Regional Election Officer Mujibor Rahman is the returning officer for polls in Barisal City Corporation.
In Barisal City, the number of reserved wards is 10 with 30 general wards. There are 211,257 voters (male 107,625, female 103,632) who can exercise their franchise at 614 booths in 100 polling stations .
While Kamal, Hiran and Mamum are gunning for the seat of Mayor, 116 candidates are contesting thirty general ward councillor posts and 45 for ten reserved councillor positions.
Electronic voting machines are being used in 12 booths of two voting centres in Barisal’s ward-16.
A total of 4,281 voters can use the machines.
Barisal City Corporation was set up on July 25, 2002.
