Police are searching for a female companion who was with Motaleb Shikdar, Khulna chief of the NCP-affiliated Jatiya Sramik Shakti, when he was shot.

Law enforcers also recovered different drugs from their residence.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at a flat in Sonadanga of Khulna. Doctors have confirmed he is now out of danger.

Khulna Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Tajul Islam said, “Preliminary investigations suggest they were involved in antisocial activities here, and the incident arose from internal conflict.”

Motaleb, 42, son of the late Moslem Shikdar from Shekpura Palli Mangal School area in Sonadanga, is a central committee organiser of the Shramik Shakti.

Police reported that equipment and evidence were recovered from the flat where the shooting occurred.

Sonadanga Police chief Rafiqul Islam identified the location as the ground floor of Mukta House on Road 109 near Al-Aqsa Mosque Memorial. CCTV footage shows that Motaleb had been continuously staying in the flat since Saturday night.

Investigation officer Animesh Mondal said, “Immediately after the incident, locals took him first to Khulna Medical College Hospital and then to City Diagnostic Centre for a CT scan. The bullet penetrated the skin near his left ear. Although he lost some blood, he survived.”

Khulna Medical College Hospital Supervisor Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman confirmed, “The bullet struck the left side of his head. Initial treatment was administered in the hospital’s surgical ward dressing room.”

Mukta House owner’s wife Ashrafunnahar told reporters, “A young woman named Tanvi, claiming to be married, rented the flat a month ago.

“She introduced herself as an NGO worker and often stayed out. Many men frequently visited her room. Upon learning about her antisocial activities through others, we issued a notice to vacate the flat. This incident happened before she could leave.”

Since the shooting, the woman, identified only as Tanvi, has been missing and police are trying to locate her.

DC Tajul Islam added, “Different drug-related items were recovered from the flat. Others are involved, and further interrogation of Motaleb will reveal additional names. Those responsible will be brought to justice quickly.”

NCP Khulna City Organiser Saif Nawaz said, “Motaleb was shot at very close range in the head. He had been working on preparations for an upcoming divisional workers’ assembly in Khulna.”
