Ctg Port workers announce indefinite strike from Sunday over NCT lease

Protesters are demanding the cancellation of proposed plans to lease out the New Mooring Container Terminal to UAE-based DP World

Workers and activists at the Chittagong Port have called an indefinite strike from Sunday morning, escalating protests over plans to lease a key container terminal to a foreign operator.

The action is being led by the “Bandar Rokkha Sangram Parishad” (Port Protection Struggle Council), which is demanding the cancellation of a proposed deal to hand over operations of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to DP World, a Dubai-based port operator.

The strike is set to begin at 8am on Sunday, following a two-day suspension of earlier work stoppages.

Protesters said their primary demand is for the government to publicly confirm that the NCT will not be leased to DP World. They are also calling for the withdrawal of disciplinary measures taken against protesting workers, assurances that no legal action will be pursued, and the removal of the port’s chairman.

The demands were outlined by committee leader Humayun Kabir at a press conference at the Chattogram Press Club on Saturday.
