Private off-dock owners have stepped back from their undeclared strike in Chattogram after receiving assurances from the Chattogram Port Authority.
They announced a one-month suspension of the programme, Port Secretary Md Omar Faruk told bdnews24.com on Wednesday evening.
The inland depot owners had earlier said they would begin the action from 6am on Thursday after failing to secure what they described as the “expected” charges.
As part of the strike, they said they would refrain from handling export cargo and empty containers.
The decision to suspend the programme came after an afternoon meeting between the Port and Customs authorities and leaders of the Bangladesh Inland Container Depots Association (BICDA).
Port Secretary Faruk said the meeting resulted in BICDA agreeing to maintain normal import-export operations.
Users of the port had expressed concern that the sudden, undeclared strike could jeopardise Bangladesh’s export sector.
BICDA General Secretary Ruhul Amin Sikder said the body sought withdrawal of specific cases and adjustment of service charges, and, following assurances, has put the programme on hold for a month.
The organisation oversees 19 private container depots in Chattogram.
Export cargo is brought to these depots, loaded into containers, and transported to the port for shipping.
They also clear imported containers of 65 product types and manage empty containers.
