‘Saoda’, a first-year student of accounting department, was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants in the city on Thursday morning when she was on her way to class.
Police have detained another student for his suspected involvement with the assault.
She was initially admitted to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital but was later airlifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
Her mother Shahida Begum filed a case with Kotwali police against several persons including second-year management student Rasel Mia, who was said to have had a relationship with Saoda.
Vice Chancellor Harunor Rashid Khan told bdnews24.com an emergency syndicate meeting had decided to expel Rasel as his name came up as a suspect.
Kotwali police OC Shakhawat Hossain said Rasel’s friend Bipul Badoi, a student of the university, had been detained over the incident.
He said police were trying to detain Rasel.
Rasel and Saoda hailed from the same locality, Barguna’s Patharghata.
Saoda’s classmate ‘Rabbi’ said the duo was in a relationship for long.
Witnesses said ‘Saoda’ was attacked at Brown Compound area when she was on her way to attend the class around 9:30am on Thursday.
Shafiul Alam, a teacher of the university’s mathematics department, told bdnews24.com Saoda passed away at around 5pm.
A resident of Brown Compound, Abdul Quader, said there was a knock at his door in the morning.
“I saw a boy slashing a girl’s head with sharp weapons,” he said. The assailant fled the scene immediately, Quader added.
Sher-e-Bangla Medical College official Md Rubel said Saoda was bleeding profusely from her head injuries.
Lecturer Shafiul Alam, who accompanied Saoda to Dhaka, said she was flown to Dhaka around Thursday noon as her conditions had deteriorated.
“Doctors declared her dead around 5pm,” he said.
