The shootout reportedly occurred at ‘Jorapukur Maath’ around 3am Tuesday.
The incident comes in the midst of reports that security forces have been asked to undertake pro-active operations to neutralise trouble-makers.
Police said Nuruzzaman Jony, 30, was among those who bombed a police vehicle at Shahbagh during the ongoing BNP-sponsored blockade. Five policemen were injured in the attack.
The deceased was the general secretary of the BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Khilgaon unit, his father Yakub Ali has said.
“Jony had attacked a police bus at Matsya Bhavan with a petrol bomb on Saturday night, Police Deputy-Commissioner Masudur Rahman told bdnews24.com.
Police said they fired back when the assailants began shooting at them during the raid at ‘Jorapukur Maath’.
Jony, injured in the firing, was declared dead at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital around 4am.
A pistol, two bullets, six hand bombs and a petrol bomb was recovered from the site, said Rahman.
Another ‘shootout’ with police at Motijheel’s AGB Colony left one Imrul Kayes, 38, dead on Monday morning.
He was later identified as a Jamaat-e-Islami leader and a Ward Councillor from Narail.
Detective Branch said they raided the area following a tip-off about troublemakers gathering there.
